There are many types of toolholders. At present, the main standards include several types of toolholder, such as BT, SK, capto, BBT, HSK, etc. BT and BBT are Japanese standards, and now they are also a standard spindle commonly used.

SK is the standard spindle in Germany. BT, SK is a simple, popular spindle connection standard, widely used in mold industry, high-speed engraving machine and other fields. HSK type is the spindle standard for the later high-speed requirements. It can be processed normally under the condition of 340000 rpm, providing working guarantee for high-precision workpieces. Traditional toolholders include Er type, powerful type, side fixed type, plane milling cutter type, DRILL CHUCK and Morse taper shank, while modern ones are hydraulic, thermal expansion and cold pressing. HSK type, HSK tool system is a new type of Tool Holder with short cone shape. Its interface adopts the way of positioning the conical surface and the end face at the same time. The handle of the knife is hollow, the length of the vertebral body is short, and the taper is 1 / 10, which is conducive to the realization of light and high-speed tool change. Due to the use of hollow vertebral body and end face positioning, the radial deformation difference between the spindle hole and the tool handle during high-speed machining is compensated, and the axial positioning error is completely eliminated, which makes the high-speed and high-precision machining possible. The handle of this kind of cutter is more and more widely used in high-speed machining center.
Km type, which is similar to HSK type, also adopts hollow short cone structure with a taper of 1 / 10. It also adopts the working mode of positioning and clamping both the conical surface and the end face at the same time. The main difference lies in the different clamping mechanisms used. Km's clamping structure has applied for the patent of the United States, which uses greater clamping force and higher system stiffness. However, because there are two symmetrical arc grooves on the taper surface of the handle of the KM cutter, it is relatively thin in comparison, and some parts have poor strength, and it needs a very large clamping force to work normally.
Capto type, this type of structure is not a cone, but a triangular cone, its edge is circular arc, the taper is one twentieth, and it is also a hollow short cone structure, the cone surface and the end face contact positioning at the same time. This structure can realize the torque transmission without sliding in both directions, so the balance problem caused by drive key and keyway is eliminated. The tool handle has a wide range of uses, and there are many types - of course, in our understanding, wooden handle is the most common, and now a variety of high-tech machinery and equipment in a variety of models have also contributed to the economic development of society.
